The Texas Independent Flock Owners Association LLC (TXIFOA) was originally created to combat Texas regulations that are strangling the hobby. Often, the regulators have no knowledge of how any of the animal husbandry actually works. For example, they might erect fences to prevent the movement of deer to stop the spread of ticks—despite the fact that ticks can crawl through the fences. This kind of regulatory overreach, especially movement, sale, and testing requirements imposed by those who may never have attended a poultry exhibition, has nearly killed exhibition poultry shows in Texas.
Challenges We Face
- Event Restrictions: Due to stringent state regulations, out-of-state entry for shows is forbidden, severely limiting participation. Texans who travel out of state are met with difficult re-entry regulations.
- Internal Conflicts: Infighting among breed clubs prevents the formation of new exhibition events, further stifling the community.
Moving Forward Together
- Advocacy: We monitor legislation and policies affecting poultry keepers and actively advocate for changes that support our community.
- Education: We promote the expansion of exhibition poultry through educational initiatives and sponsorships at all levels, from youth programs to large-scale exhibitions.
- Community Building: By fostering mutual respect and understanding among backyard keepers, exhibition participants, and hobbyists, we aim to bridge gaps and build a stronger, more inclusive community.
