Reforming Poultry Regulations in Texas
As Texans, we're proud to contribute to our state's agricultural industry in meaningful ways. We create new breeds, inspire youth interest in poultry, and even work towards conserving threatened species.
Challenging Unreasonable Regulations
Recent regulations imposed by the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) have made it difficult for us to participate in the poultry community. These regulations are unreasonable and burdensome, making it hard for us to comply with them. We're seeking reasonable changes that acknowledge our expertise and commitment as responsible poultry exhibitors.
Lessons Learned from Past Regulatory Challenges
Attempting to address these issues in the past, our efforts were met with criticism and discouragement within our own community. Some people felt we were unprepared or that our approach was flawed. Others spread rumors and gossip about what club leaders were supposedly saying. This experience taught us the importance of being structured and having a clear plan for addressing regulatory challenges moving forward.
The Burden of Overly Restrictive Regulations
We've learned from experience that compliance can be difficult, especially when regulations are unclear or burdensome. Some exhibitors have been held up out of state waiting on CVI approvals, while others have faced threats of depopulation because they couldn't get additional testing done. We know Avian Influenza is a real concern, but we also know how to protect our flocks and follow biosecurity practices.
It's time for Texas to recognize our value as responsible poultry enthusiasts. We're not asking for special treatment, just fair and reasonable compliance that acknowledges our expertise and commitment. We must work together to create a more effective regulatory framework that allows us to continue enjoying our passion for poultry while also promoting animal welfare.
Working Together for Change
As proud Texans and dedicated exhibitors, we're passionate about our birds - we need Texas to stand with us, not against us.
